Over the last century, exposure to toxic hazards during military service has been increasingly understood to represent an important safety concern, including exposure to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War and to the particulate matter released from burn pits, wherein waste ranging from jet fuel to human waste is burned into the open air.1,2 Although the prevalence of exposure is unknown, over the past 34 years, at least 4.7 million veterans were likely exposed to toxic hazards, burn pits, and other particulate matter pollution.
