SUCCESS magazine|January/February 2024, Volume 67, Issue 1Leadership in an AI WorldAs a leader in the media space, I felt the power of AI the first time I used ChatGPT back in March 2023. I could immediately see the impact and efficiencies for magazines, media, marketing and coaching. The streamlining of ideas, the reduction of research time and the opportunities to provide more access to more people interested in professional development and personal coaching all had me pumped! I was driven by the limitless possibilities and couldn’t wait to brainstorm more ways to utilize this app with other leaders, team members, family members and friends. However, looking back, I understand that my eagerness to bring this new technology into the workplace and my social circles may have overwhelmed others at the time. I can also see how my excitement may have…2 min
SUCCESS magazine|January/February 2024, Volume 67, Issue 1National Clean Up Your Computer Month.ADRIFT IN A DIGITAL SEA OF INFORMATION A 2022 report by Forrester Consulting found that employees spend 2.4 hours a day looking for the right information. The complex problem stems from a variety of factors, ranging from too many software apps and information silos to information overload. This drains employee productivity, as workers get frustrated trying to find the right information in the right place at the right time. One solution? Employees should adopt a weekly habit of cleaning out their computers. This could include old emails, temporary files, outdated information, unused programs, irrelevant documents and any other types of files no longer necessary. Emptying the computer’s recycle bin helps, too. Doing so boosts a computer’s performance and search speed, reduces online clutter and improves employees’ digital organization. HISTORIC TECH…1 min
SUCCESS magazine|January/February 2024, Volume 67, Issue 1Global Innovator John LeeWhen you talk with energetic British entrepreneur John Lee, it’s hard to imagine that, one day, there might be two of him. That’s because the self-made millionaire and global public speaker is in the midst of cloning himself. Yes, you read that right. There might not be an actual double in the works, but Lee is currently using artificial intelligence technology to gather data from thousands of hours of his own presentations to clone his voice and—perhaps, eventually—his image. The immediate goal is for generative AI to be able to answer questions in Lee’s own voice using context and expertise from his previous speaking engagements. With a growing team and upward of 6 million social media followers as of press time, he says he can’t possibly respond to every single…6 min

SUCCESS magazine|January/February 2024, Volume 67, Issue 1Grassroots Marketing Is Changing—What’s Replacing It?In a society where people are increasingly online, marketing strategies have had to adapt to remain effective. While the days of traditional grassroots marketing—characterized by face-to-face interactions, local events and word-of-mouth campaigns—are not necessarily over, they have evolved. This evolution has largely been driven by the rise of social media, influencer marketing and the emergence of innovative digital platforms. Tara Schroetter, vice president of digital at MMGY Wagstaff, explains that “influencers are your new street team, a viral TikTok trend is your new word-of-mouth and geo-targeted Instagram ads allow reach into a niche audience set with the click of a button. Katherine Johnson, the inspiration behind the 2016 film Hidden Figures, played a critical role as a “human computer” in NASA’s space race. As a mathematician, Johnson performed complex calculations that helped send American astronauts into orbit and bring them back safely in the 1960s. Johnson’s achievements earned her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. Kimberly Bryant, a Vanderbilt School of Engineering alumna, founded the nonprofit Black Girls CODE (BGC) in 2011. With 14 chapters across the U.S. and one in Johannesburg, South Africa, BGC offers programs on web design, gaming, app development and robotics—all geared toward empowering girls ages 7 to 17 to enter STEM fields. And if you think you’re overwhelmed… well, just imagine how Elin Hauge feels. “I KEEP COMING BACK TO THE FACT THAT AI IS NOT A STRATEGY—IT’S A TOOLBOX.” “I should send a thank-you note to Sam Altman for keeping us busy,” she laughs, referring, of course, to the pioneering entrepreneur, investor and programmer who’s the CEO of OpenAI. “The launch of ChatGPT in November [of 2022] has caused a lot of confusion. But, back in the ’90s, there was no such thing as wearable technology that could give you continuous information about your health. You went to the doctor, got blood drawn and had tests run. In between visits, you lived in the unknown. In 1991, Rosalind Picard was a savvy electrical engineer and recent Massachusetts Institute of Technology doctoral graduate. She was ready to take on the technology world. Already, Picard knew she wanted to create technology that helped people. She started designing computers and became interested in how the human brain works to build better computers. Many teachers are also embracing AI, especially when it means they can be more efficient and effective at their jobs. AI enables teachers to streamline administrative tasks, drive efficiency and fill gaps where they need a little help, such as adapting lessons to individual learning needs in a classroom of 30-plus kids. Yet, despite all these technologies, the unique skills that come naturally to us as humans—emotional intelligence, empathy and social awareness to name a few—still reign supreme. SUCCESS magazine|January/February 2024, Volume 67, Issue 1Many Machine Tools Seem To Have Human InstinctFor years, the morning drumbeat of England has echoed around the world, but now that martial sound is followed by a mightier one—the whir of the American machine tool. The wars of the future will not be struggles by armed men for the control of territory, but contests in which automatic machines—automatic factories, even—will battle for the trade of the world. In preliminary skirmishes of this bloodless warfare, to be waged more fiercely than were any of the wars of conquest of the ancients, America has so signally triumphed that the Old World rulers are alarmed by the growing cloud in their commercial skies, to which they refer as “the American danger.’’ This is an age of steel. Fortunately, AI may help put a dent in those stats. In fact, scientists regularly tap the power of AI to significantly impact heart health, from detecting weak heart pumps and improving coronary artery disease diagnosis to predicting heart attacks and strokes and recommending treatments for better outcomes.…1 min
SUCCESS magazine|January/February 2024, Volume 67, Issue 1How to Make Money With AI While Saving Time and EffortI used to be one of those people who prided myself in how busy I was, regularly working 80-plus hours a week. I started a PR agency with a vision of helping people make a bigger impact through media exposure. Starting any business can be a lot of work, especially one with lofty goals. This meant I wore all the hats in the beginning: sales, marketing, content creation, fulfillment, and everything in between. No matter how much progress I made in my business, it always felt like I needed to work more. For years, I wore my “busyness” like a badge of honor and loved telling people how hectic my life was… until I completely burned out. After years of grinding, I realized I needed to completely reevaluate what I…7 min

He wanted to bring attention to the brain advocacy work that he does with the Aoki Foundation. Aoki’s face lit up when he told me this story over a Zoom call during his European tour. But can it replace the heart and soul of a songwriter? Not likely. In any kind of creative industry, most are in a wait-and-see mode when it comes to AI. That said, it’s not as if technology hasn’t already given music makers tools that have greatly impacted their world.
